Where do I need a flame arrester?
The first step when specifying a flame arrester for your plant or equipment is to determine the location of any potential ignition source and identify what is to be protected.
The design objective is then to place the selected flame arrester as close as possible to the ignition source. This is because the flame, if not extinguished, will proceed down the pipe. Generally speaking, the flame will accelerate because of pressure build-up resulting from increased temperature and volume of burnt products, making it significantly more difficult to stop and increasing the likelihood of detonation.
Where there is more than one source of ignition, it may be necessary to install more than one flame arrester. Both in-line and end-of-line flame arresters serve important roles in an overall explosion prevention system
Extremes of temperature will also need to be taken in consideration when specifying a flame arrester. If corrosive or dangerous substances are present, it may also be necessary for the flame arrester to be constructed using special materials. In the majority of cases, a stainless steel element with a carbon or stainless steel housing is adequate.
The positioning of flame arresters
The first consideration when deciding where to position a flame arrester is to locate the source(s) of ignition and determine what is to be protected. It is also important to understand whether the flame arrester will act alone or be part of a larger safety system.
Where there are several sources of ignition, or more than one path that a flame might follow, more than one flame arrester will usually be required. In such instances it is vital to ensure that the flame arrester that has been supplied for a given location is not used elsewhere.
This is particularly applicable to in-line deflagration arresters or when a change in the gas or vapour is involved. If you are in any doubt whatsoever please contact the Elmac Technologies customer services team who will be happy to advise.
