Flame Arrester product range
Elmac Technologies deflagration flame arresters are engineered to have the best possible flow and pressure drop characteristics without compromising their flame-arresting capability. They are available with either gauze pack elements or crimped metal ribbon construction.
Flame arresters with woven gauze pack elements are ideal for the relatively low flame speeds and explosion pressures associated with deflagrations. They provide a robust, cost-effective solution at modest pressure drops. However, crimped ribbon deflagration arresters may also be used when appropriate.
Elmac Technologies detonation arresters have crimped metal ribbon elements. This is because detonation conditions are particularly demanding in terms of flame speed and explosion pressure. As a result, detonation arresters tend to have higher pressure drops than deflagration flame arresters.
This means that where flow rate and pressure drop are critical, a deflagration arrester is often preferable to the comparable detonation arrester. It should be remembered, however, that the installation location for a deflagration arrester is much more critical than for a detonation product.
Elmac engineers have created detonation flame arresters with a cellular structure that reduces pressure drop and the effects of fouling in the element. Sophisticated modelling of flow through channels provides a method for rapid optimisation of flame arrester characteristics, and has reduced the product development cycle time considerably.
End-of-line deflagration flame arresters
As their name suggests, Elmac Technologies end-of-line deflagration flame arresters are designed to be installed at the very end of a pipeline or exit vent from a vessel where the ignition source is external. Optional weatherhoods are also available. An end-of-line tank vent combination flame arrester is also available and can be bolted to the inlet of an approved pressure/vacuum valve at the end of a pipeline or exit vent.

Low-pressure storage tank fittings
To enhance the performance of an end-of-line flame arrester, we also offer a range of pressure and storage tank fittings. These have been designed to protect tanks from rupture or implosion during filling and/or emptying cycles. They limit product loss and environmental discharges while also protecting tanks during thermal changes. Flanged discharge connections are available to facilitate incorporation into vapour recovery/recirculation systems or gas handling processes.
- Stainless steel, carbon steel, cast iron and aluminium construction
- Flanged ANSI 150 or BS4504 PN10 as standard. Other drillings on request
- End-of-line Tank Vent Combination Flame Arresters fit below pressure/vacuum valves for additional safety
- 2" to 12" nominal bore
- Pressure settings from 215 Pag to 7473 Pag
- Pressure, vacuum or combined valves; manhole covers; gauge hatches also available

In-line deflagration flame arresters
Elmac Technologies in-line deflagration flame arresters are designed for pipeline installation in close proximity to the potential source of ignition in order to confine the flame or explosion to the immediate area. There are limits relating to the installation location. The pipeline should be straight and smooth between the ignition source and the arrester and free from obstructions, bends, junctions or section changes. Our technical team will advise on specific location queries.

In-line detonation arresters
Elmac Technologies in-line detonation flame arresters are for use in pipelines where there is a significant distance between the ignition source and the arrester. This type of flame arrester may also be used where the pipe is rough, bent, obstructed or has section changes. Permitted installation conditions are significantly more flexible than for in-line deflagration flame arresters. Extensive flame testing has been carried out on both deflagrations and unstable detonations.

Flashback guards
A conventional flame arrester is not usually a cost-effective way of protecting air intakes or fuel/air intakes on larger burners and oxidizers from the risk of flashback into flammable atmospheres. Elmac Technologies elements have been developed as large flashback guards for these duties. Products are available custom-designed in both rectangular and circular shapes.

Light duty flame arresters
Also known as safety vents, Elmac Technologies light duty flame arresters prevent flashback and extinguish flames where vented or purged flammable gases or vapours could be accidentally ignited. (e.g. by lightning, electrical fault or human error). They are available in either aluminium/zinc alloy, or steel versions.
- Available in sizes from 3/8" to 2" nominal bore
- Stainless steel elements
- Male & female BSP fittings
- Optional weatherhoods

ATEX Directive certification
Under the definitions of the ATEX Directive, these products are components and as such cannot be certified alone. Usually they are to be incorporated into systems or equipment, as defined in the Directive, which must then be certified as a whole. Although this is the responsibility of system manufacturer, Elmac Technologies technical team will be pleased to assist.

Spark arresters
Elmac Technologies has also developed elements to provide simple and cost-effective spark arresters. In this situation, the elements behave as filters to remove incandescent particles from the process gas stream.
