A new name – with a pedigree in flame arrester technology
On 1st September 2007, Elmac Engineering, the acknowledged international technical leader in flame and explosion safety systems for industry, changed its name to Elmac Technologies. This change of name was implemented to reflect the company's growing global reputation for designing and developing flame arrester solutions that bring enhanced levels of safety protection to the worldwide gas processing and distribution industry.
A brief history
Established for almost 60 years, Elmac Engineering developed its first flame arrester for use with highly combustible town gas in 1948. Of an early crimped metal design, this pioneering safety solution was quickly adopted across the gas processing and distribution industry. As a result, it played an important part in helping to establish the global reputation for the design, manufacture and supply of safety systems to a broad range of sectors that Elmac Technologies still serves today.

In 2001, knitted mesh technology specialists, KnitMesh, acquired Elmac Engineering. The acquisition enabled KnitMesh to expand its products into the global safety business environment whilst providing Elmac Engineering with enhanced manufacturing, research and development capabilities.
Focused on even greater success
After enjoying significant growth in both its knitted mesh and flame arrester businesses, KnitMesh made the strategic decision earlier this year to differentiate clearly its various technology disciplines in order to focus each business on achieving greater success.

As part of this strategy for growth, in September 2007 Elmac Engineering became Elmac Technologies – an organisation clearly positioned to bring enhanced levels of flame and explosion prevention to diverse applications in the global oil, gas and petrochemical industries; mining, pharmaceuticals and power generation; agro-chemicals and fertilisers; distillers, food, flavours and fragrance companies; waste treatment organisations and special equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
The technical leaders in flame and explosion prevention
Elmac Technologies offers considerable technical leadership and employs research teams renowned for developing solutions for the most challenging of industrial applications. The company is developing a comprehensive range of enhanced in-line and end-of-line deflagration arresters and in-line unstable detonation arresters that are suitable for gas groups IIA, IIB3 and IIC. These are rigorously tested in accordance with BS EN 12874: 2001 - the European standard defining performance requirements, test methods and limits for use of flame arresters.
Design Capability
By virtue of their innovative in-line and end-of-line designs, Elmac Technologies' flame arresters are frequently more compact than their competitors' devices and therefore better suited for use in today's often space restricted production environments. This is due to the fact that flame arresters from Elmac Technologies do not rely solely on conventional flame arresting techniques but, instead, utilise specialised materials and novel designs to deliver benefits to their customers.
Meeting the 2006 EU ATEX Directive
Elmac Technologies can assist clients by providing reviews of proposed new installations, advising on site extensions and evaluating existing flame arrester capabilities. To assist companies in meeting the 2006 EU ATEX Directive for flame arrester compliance, the company also offers free-of-charge site surveys and technical presentations.
State-of-the-art manufacturing facilities
Celebrating 60 years in business in 2008, Elmac Technologies today operates from a state-of-the-art manufacturing and technology centre close to Chester, UK, and has additional manufacturing centres in South Africa and China.
Dr Martyn Cooling
The activities of Elmac Technologies are overseen by Group Operations Director, Dr Martyn Cooling, a member of the International Standards Committee for Flame Arresters and a member of the UK Working Group for Flame Arresters. Dr Cooling, who obtained a PhD in Chemical Thermodynamics, has worked in the research and development of flame and explosion prevention technologies for industry for over 20 years.
Setting the standard
An 'Investors in People' business, Elmac Technologies remains acutely aware of the need for world-class standards of quality and customer service in all aspects of the business. Accordingly, the organisation is committed to the implementation of all standards relevant to its operations and activities. In addition to BS EN 12874:2001, under the umbrella of the ATEX Directive and the Pressure Equipment Directive (PED 97/23/EC), these standards include: BS EN ISO 9001:2000 (the total quality assurance management standard), BS EN ISO 14001:2004 (the environmental management standard) and OHSAS 18001:1999 (the international occupational health & safety standard).
